Grown, not built
The first documented mention dates back to 1435, when it was already a working farm, later expanded to include a brickworks and an inn. In 1960, it became the Steinbacher Hof, today’s main building. When Count von Moltke took over the estate in 2011, he gave it not only a new name but also a direction that has endured ever since: not a reconstruction of history, but its consistent continuation.
An 80-kilometer radius and a herb garden
Goats, red deer, chickens, and geese live on 51 hectares—animals that belong to the estate just like the Chiemgau mountains on the horizon. What grows in our own herb garden and thrives on the pastures is part of a cycle that has long been lived here. The Michelin Guide’s Green Star was not the objective, but the confirmation.
Part of a community since 2019
Relais & Châteaux brings together properties around the world that offer their guests one thing in common: a sense of place. Gut Steinbach has been a member since 2019, the only establishment of its kind in Chiemgau. What does that mean? That no one stays here according to corporate mandates, but according to individual character, and that a conscious choice was made for uniqueness where uniformity would have been easier.
